Creating Opportunity for Orthopedic Residents

Growing and Sustaining the Ghana Global Health Experience

As part of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation’s comprehensive residency program, we offer global health learning opportunities that strengthen the breadth and quality of our curriculum and enhance our ability to attract top medical trainees. Experiences employing the techniques and innovative thinking required to treat patients in developing countries expand the way our residents understand and approach their careers.

Through our annual Ghana Global Health Experience at Eastern Region Hospital in Koforidua, Ghana, our team operates on an underserved population without access to regular orthopedic care. The limited resources of the hospital and community inform an extraordinary learning experience that requires preoperative planning, surgical adaptation, creative thinking and complex problem-solving. The faculty guide the learners while also facilitating the learning of the local surgeons and trainees as we seek to make this both a collaborative and sustainable mission.

The Ghana Global Health Experience is a highly sought-after opportunity. Currently offered just once a year, and typically involving only one resident per trip, this program has significant growth potential. To expand and sustain this important opportunity for residents, we need to remove financial barriers to their participation.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 annually as well as $750,000 in endowed funds to both grow the program to four, one-week trips each year and to establish renewable funding that will allow all senior residents to have a transformational global health experience, regardless of their ability to pay for it.

You can make a difference!

Your support of this important initiative will enhance our residents’ training and significantly impact the quality of care they provide to patients in central Pennsylvania, across the country and around the globe.
